How to Deal With Critics, Judgment and Your Inner Critic

21 Flares 21 Flares ×

I discuss today how to deal with and overcome your critics and inner critic. We give way to much credence to our critics and too harshly judge ourselves. This creates much more than just a negative mindset. It keeps us from speaking our truths, and being authentic.

We become fearful in sharing what we think because:
1) People may think I am an idiot for my idea
2) Perhaps I will get exposed for being a fraud
3) People may not agree with me and my ideas
4) I’ve worked so hard (on something) and what if people don’t like it

Here’s my story on criticism:

I dreamt about launching my new book, and how fantastic it would be. I started writing it in January of 2013. I thought about all the great interactions and reviews I’d be receiving and doors and opportunities it would open up.

But that was a fantasy I didn’t tell many people about for a long time.

Because I was afraid that my book would be perceived negatively (or stupid) and I’d be judged harshly for it. I didn’t want to be criticized or deal with the potential negative pushback.

Now I see how silly and insanely ridiculous that was, but at the time — the fear of criticism felt very real. That’s exactly what we’re talking about today: how to deal with the fear of criticism.

If you ever let the fear of what other people will say stop you from creating to your full potential, this video is for you.

You’ll learn four critical points to keep in mind about critics, judgment and criticism.

Here are a summary of the points in today’s video:

1. Judgment and criticism is something everyone does
2) Criticism stinks for a reason
3) Your critics are the ones taking the easy way out
4) Criticism doesn’t matter at all for a specific reason

After you’ve watched, I’d want to know, have you ever let fear of criticism and judgment stop you? What did you do to overcome it?

AND…

Have you faced harsh criticism? If so, did it take you out for a while — or did you find a way to get right back up on the horse?

People handle criticism (or the fear of it) in many different ways. That’s why I’m really excited to hear your perspective on this.
